85 km west of Arugam Bay. For those coming from the eastern part of the island, Buttala marks the point where they can choose either to branch off to Kataragama (45 km), Yala National Park (83 km) and the south coast, or to continue westward along the mountainous area (for the north, it is better to have branched off 15 km before, at Hulandawa). Sugar cane cultivation is the main economic activity of the region. An archway welcomes visitors to this small town that has remained authentic, surrounded by dozens of villages that allow one to approach the reality of rural Sri Lanka, off the tourist trail.
