Kumana National Park, formerly known as Yala East, is located 391 km from Colombo. Closed from 1985 to 2003 due to the war, it was also extremely affected by the 2004 tsunami. Like Yala West (Ruhuna) National Park, Kumana is renowned for its variety of wildlife, characteristic of the tropical dry forest zone. Large mammals such as elephants and leopards are found here. In the south-eastern part of the park, mangroves and lagoons are abundant and provide important habitat for the 255 species of birds that have been recorded. Tens of thousands of them migrate here every year
