Located 60 km from Trincomalee, the Kokkilai Reserve was created in 1951 and includes the Kokkilai Lagoon and surrounding area. It lies on the border between the Eastern and Northern provinces, which run through it. Although relatively unprotected in terms of marine life, the lagoon boasts attractive seabeds with beds of seaweed, mangroves and aquatic birds. A wide variety of migratory birds can be admired here: pelicans, herons, storks, cormorants, wild ducks and, in certain seasons, pink flamingos.
