About 800 meters off Nilaveli and 17 kilometers north of Trincomalee. After being designated as a nature reserve in 1963, Pigeon Island became one of Sri Lanka's two marine parks in 2003 (the second is Hikkaduwa, on the west coast). Pigeon Island consists of two islets: Large Pigeon Island and Small Pigeon Island. The larger one is bordered by a coral reef of about 200 meters long and 100 meters wide, which is very popular with the local diving clubs. The two islets are home to a very large bird population and are the subject of many boat trips for tourists.
