Kankesanthurai (KKS), at the northern end of the island, bordering the ocean, was a major trading port between Sri Lanka and India until 1990. Economic activities related to this port were interrupted by the war and have not yet resumed. Only an abandoned cement factory remains in the coastal landscape. Beyond the houses of the village, approaching the lighthouse, one enters a complex occupied by the army and the police( obligatorycheckpoint ). A large hotel was inaugurated here in 2014, along with the new railway station nearby. The city is home to two important Hindu temples that deserve the attention of visitors
