The most important Hindu festival in the north of the country takes place for 26 days around the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil temple in Jaffna.
In Jaffna, 6 days after the arrival of the new moon, the most important Hindu festival in the north of the country takes place during 26 days. In the last days, the festival is in full swing and the deities are brought out of the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil, and transported by hand on carts among the crowd. Also called Nallur Murugan Temple Festival, this festival gathers thousands of devotees from all over Sri Lanka, but also from South India. During this period the restaurants of the city serve mainly vegetarian food.
