15 km north of Kilinochchi and 57 km southeast of Jaffna, on the route of the A9 connecting Vavuniya to Jaffna. Geographically, Elephant Pass is located on an isthmus that connects the Jaffna peninsula to the rest of the island. The name Elephant Pass Lagoon is often given to the part of the Jaffna Lagoon that it spans. Elephant Pass has been protected by military defenses for several centuries. The first known fortification was a fort built by the Portuguese in 1760. During the following colonizations, this fort was occupied and modified by the Dutch in 1776, then by the British. In 1952, the Sri Lankan army built a huge military base and abandoned the old fort which was transformed into a guesthouse. This fort became a guesthouse and has completely disappeared.
