170 km north of Colombo, 30 km from Puttalam and about 40 km from Anuradhapura. Wilpattu National Park occupies an area of 1,320 km2, dotted with some 30 freshwater lakes, where grey herons and cormorants fish. There are also other animals such as fallow deer, wild pigs, but especially elephants and spotted panthers (leopards), of which this is one of the favourite areas. The longest snake on the island, the python, can also be found here, with some specimens ranging from 6 to 10 m in length, as well as crocodiles. After being closed for more than 15 years due to the war, the park was reopened in 2010 and is a great tourist success. The road that crosses the park to the west and connects Puttalam to Mannar does not provide access to the visits.
