The Chacahua Lagoons are located 86 km west of Puerto Escondido. Catalogued as a national park by the Mexican government, they are home to three lagoons: Chacachua, La Patoría and Salinas. There is an incredible diversity of animal and plant species, including 136 species of birds (including the Canadian pelican, the heron and the pink spoonbill), 23 reptiles, 4 amphibians and 20 mammals. Visitors can fish, swim (watch out for crocodiles), or follow the water on a boat or kayak, admiring the local wildlife. Further out, where the lagoon meets the sea, there are beautiful beaches to explore on short hikes; Chacahua is famous for its surfing. For the intrepid, the jewel of the place is called Playa Los Azufres.
