At 14 km from San Miguel de Allende, on the road to Dolores Hidalgo, is the sanctuary of Atotonilco, which dates from the eighteenth century. A fine example of baroque architecture, his paintings are compared with those of the Sistine Chapel in official brochures, which is to say the least exaggerated. It includes a church and several small chapels decorated with beautiful religious paintings. It is also a place of great historical significance, since it is where Miguel Hidalgo, the independence leader, took the banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe to make it the banner of independence.
