Located 64 km east of Kemijärvi and 80 km south of Savukoski, Salla is a small, peaceful village of 5,000 inhabitants with a pleasant ski resort. It is also the closest Lapp commune to Russia. Part of the village was destroyed by the Germans during the Second World War, as was the railroad line that linked it to Russia. As this line has still not been restored, buses are the only way to get to Russia twice a week (on Mondays and Thursdays), but you need to remember to get your Russian visa in advance. Without crossing the border, the natural surroundings on the Finnish side are no less attractive!
