Located across the Mississippi River from the Uptown area of New Orleans between the communities of Westwego and Harvey, the small town of Marrero (population over 30,000) is part of Jefferson Parish. It was named after a Louisiana politician and founder of the Marrero Land Company, Louis Herman Marrero. Marrero joined the 25th Louisiana Regiment during the Civil War. The main reason for coming to Marrero is to access the Barataria Preserve, a natural site that is part of the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve and that shelters marshes and swamps frequented by alligators.
