South of Almogorodo is one of the most amazing landscapes in New Mexico: a valley filled with white sand dunes made of gypsum crystals. The dune field covers 710 km2. Gypsum is rarely found in the form of sand, due to intense erosion. The rarity of the phenomenon, its unusual aspect and the dimensions of the space give the place a picturesque beauty.Small endemic lizards, Holbrookia maculata, are found in this desert. Some westerns have seen in these places their perfect setting, it is the case of My name is Nobody (1973) with Terrence Hill. It also reminds us of Jodorowsky's psychedelic films.
