Savannah is the headquarters of Chatham County County. Founded in 1733, it was the capital of the province of Georgia and the first capital of the state.During the War of Secession, Sherman's «March to the Sea» (Sherman's March to the Sea) is the most commonly given name to the Savannah campaign conducted at the end of 1864 by the Union's Major-General, William Tecumseh Sherman. The campaign began when EU troops left the newly conquered city of Atlanta on 15 November 1864 and ended with the port of Savannah on 22 December. During this campaign, troops of northerners were stole and destroying almost all cities in their passage. However, by entering Savannah, Sherman was so impressed with his beauty that he could not destroy it. The famous anecdote is that he sent the same day a telegram to President Abraham Lincoln, to offer him the city as Christmas presents.Today, with 142 000 inhabitants, Savannah has become an industrial centre and an important port town on the Atlantic. Its historic district was designated a national historic site in 1966. It is among the largest in the country. Well preserved, the narrow streets, the old houses and the squares flooded by the Spanish moss have kept a true stamp. Of the 24 original places, 22 still contribute to creating the unique atmosphere of the city. Calhoun Square is the only one to have retained all its original buildings. The most important buildings include: The Pirates'House (1754), a hostel mentioned in the book by Robert Louis Stevenson on the Treasure Island; The Herb House (1734), the oldest building in Georgia, and The Olde Pink House (1789), the site of the first bank of Georgia; the birthplace of Juliet Gordon Low (completed in 1821), creator of the US Girl Scouts movement and now owned by the US Girl Scouts movement; The Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences, built in 1812 as a manor house, was one of the first public museums in the South. The restored churches of the city include: the Lutheran Church of Ascension (1741), the independent Presbyterian Church (1890) and the Cathedral of Saint-Jean-Baptiste (1876), one of the largest Roman Catholic churches in the South.
