Located on the border with Alabama, at the western end of the state and about 1h30 south of Atlanta, Columbus is the second largest city in Georgia. Once known as the fountain city, Columbus has always been centred on its river, which was the reason for its creation in the first place. For a long time, it supplied energy to the city's industries, mainly the textile industries. Columbus was then one of the country's largest production centres, particularly for jean Denim. Then, with the gentrification phenomenon in the 1960s and 1970s and the arrival of shopping centres that attracted commercial activity on the outskirts of the city, the centre was barely emptied. In recent years, Columbus has embarked on a project to revitalize the downtown core, including the development of the river, which offers a very enjoyable natural break. When the water level is low, the setting is magnificent with the rocky islets that dot the river and after 3pm, when the dam is open, the rapids become a real paradise for rafting enthusiasts. Right next door, Uptown is the commercial heart of Columbus. Broadway Avenue, lined with bars, restaurants and shops and interspersed with a green esplanade dotted with fountains and sculptures, is an ideal place to stroll or go out at night. In spring and autumn, don't miss the free outdoor concerts every Friday evening. Uptown with its typical well-preserved brick buildings is a pleasant district in general. Today, more focused on health, banking, technology, Columbus is also a major military base with the Fort Benning Infantry Base. The National Infantry Museum is one of the most popular attractions for American visitors and military families
