Founded in 1823 on the banks of the river Ocmulgee, Macon has been enriched by cotton. Epargnée by the war of Secession (despite the presence of the main confederate factory, in 1864, General Sherman evaded Macon during his March to the sea), the city has one of the largest concentrations of Maisons houses of the state. Most of these are located on the upper sides, close to the university, not in the city centre. The latter, which has a certain charm, consists of large streets and typical streets where traditional buildings from the beginning of the 1900 s to the façades of red brick follow. To name just a few of the beautiful residences that dotted the western part of Macon, we will be making the names of Cannonball House & Museum (856 Mulberry Street), Hay House (934 Georgia Avenue), Woodruff House (988 Bond Street) or Sidney Lanier Cottage (935 High Street), which was the home of the famous poet, musician and author from the city, Sidney Clopton Lanier (1842-1881).).Macon is also known as the city where Otis Redding lived, a great star of the soul of the 1960 s. The association founded in his memory, led by his wife and daughter, is still active in Macon. Less publicized in the city but still globally known, the Little Richard rock was born in Macon in 1932. Many other artists also come from the city. This is the case with blues singer Lucille Hegamin (1894-1970), rock folk singer Mark Heard (1951-1992), jazz singer Randy Crawford (1952-) but also country singer Jason Aldean (1977-). The rock band of the 1970 s The Allman Brothers Band also marked the city. A museum is dedicated to The Big house, The Allman Brother Band Museum, from 1970 to 1973. It should also be noted that Macon is the place where the Capricorn Records, a Mediterranean independent Label founded in 1969, will be held in.A passage by the Visitor Center for raising awareness of this Macon musical past is an enriching experience. This Visitor Center is built in real interactive museum where music is queen. Two places of interest are adjacent to the Visitor Center. The Tubman Museum, founded in 1981 but whose current building was inaugurated in 2015, is a museum dedicated to Afro-American art, history and culture, and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, a museum to the glory of sport and athletes who marked sporting history in the United States and Georgia. On the heights of the city overlooking the Ocmulgee River, one can see a replica of Fort Benjamin Hawkins's main tower, built in 1806 and at the origin of the city's development. Below is the Ocmulgee National Monument & Indian Mounds, to visit to understand how the Amerindian peoples (Mississippiens and Puis) lived in the Places Well before the arrival of the first settlers. Every year, in September, there is a great Indian party: the Ocmulgee Indian Celebration.Less than 90 miles from Atlanta and 170 miles from Savannah, Macon is the cultural nucleus of the centre of the state. Besides the Grand Opera House, which hosts the Macon Symphony Orchestra, the Cox Capitol Theatre, the Douglass Theatre and the Macon Little Theatre are also popular entertainment venues. Many restaurants and bars on both sides of Cherry Street, the main downtown axis, make the city extremely pleasant and ideal for a stopover between Atlanta and the ocean.Macon is part of the steps of Georgia's Antebellum Trail.
