La Plaine-des-Grègues is a small village situated at an altitude of 800 m, around 30 minutes from Saint-Pierre and 20 minutes from Grande Anse and Manapany-les-Bains. Off the beaten tourist track, its location in a basin gives it the air of a mini-cirque. It's the "capital" of turmeric, the rhizome grown to produce Pei saffron. A museum is dedicated to it: the Maison du Curcuma, as well as a festival in September. A challenging 5-hour hike, the Margosiers loop, circles the village, with views over the Remparts river. You can also picnic at Rond de La Plaine-des-Grègues, at the bottom of the valley.
