The Island of the States is a 75 km long pebble, located 300 km off the coast of Tierra del Fuego, with a climate of the most inhospitable ... A priori of no interest for the passing tourist. But in 1993, the Frenchman André Bronner, known as "Yul", stumbled upon it by chance. Seduced by the total isolation of this small island, he returned the following year and discovered the remains of a lighthouse inaugurated in 1884 by Navy Colonel Carlos Lasserre and abandoned in 1902. It was also meticulously described by Jules Verne in Le Phare du bout du Monde (without ever having seen it). It was at this time that André Bronner from La Rochelle decided to rebuild it. This unlikely idea then convinced some French industrialists who were seduced by this crazy project. They provided the necessary materials: pine wood, the zinc roof, even the know-how to resist a wind of 300 km/h, and the solar panels that provide the lighthouse's energy. The climatic conditions there are indeed extreme! Then, in 2000, André Bronner began building the replica of the Phare du bout du Monde lighthouse in La Rochelle. In 2019, on the 20th anniversary of the lighthouse's reconstruction, André Bronner wanted to finance a new lighting system. The ultimate opportunity to make the light of this building, as historic as it is unusual, shine once again. For those who would like to get a glimpse of this Faro del fin del mundo (whose official name is the lighthouse of San Juan del Salvamento), a replica exists at the Presidio de Ushuaia.
