Bandar Seri Begawan or BSB is the administrative and economic capital of the Sultanate of Brunei. It is also home to the sultan and his family, whose grandiose palace, the Istana Nurul Iman, is just a stone's throw from the city center. The city is home to some 260,000 inhabitants, two-thirds of the sultanate's total population. Aside from the extravagance of the palace, the city is far from flaunting all the wealth accumulated thanks to the oil windfall. There are no huge towers or grand boulevards here: BSB is a sober town with a modest charm, all the more appreciable for the fact that its inhabitants are very approachable and there are no traffic jams whatsoever. If you only visit BSB during your stay in Brunei, you'll certainly miss out on the natural attractions of the rest of the sultanate, but you'll already be there, a ten-minute boat ride away, in the mangroves of the Sungai Brunei, where you can observe nasal monkeys roaming freely... On the other hand, you'll be struck by the almost eerie calm of the city center.
