Capital of Binh Thuân province, Phan Thiêt is located 200 km north of Ho Chi Minh City and 250 km from Nha Trang. Former port of the Champa kingdom, Phan Thiêt keeps a strong commercial tradition. In this city, crossed by the Cai River, a large Cham market was held where rice, tobacco and pineapples were sold. Phan Thiêt is famous for its excellent nuoc-mâm, the fish sauce, and the cultivation of dragon fruit(thanh long). Originally from Central America, it was imported to Vietnam by French settlers in the early 19th century. The hotels of Phan Thiêt are not very interesting because of the proximity of the superb beach of Mui Ne, 24 km away, along which resorts and seaside activities are concentrated.
