The name Mutare means "piece of metal" and refers to the gold veins discovered about a hundred years ago in the village of Penalonga, located 17 km north of the town. The town was moved in 1896 to be closer to the railroad. A small mining town established by settlers and originally called Umtali, Mutare is the fifth largest city in the country, with an estimated population of 200,000. Today, it is a pleasant and quiet place in a beautiful mountain setting. The streets of the city center, lined with jacaranda trees, have everything a traveler needs and a good range of accommodations. For those arriving from Mozambique, Mutare is a very good introduction to the country. From Harare, take the A3 national highway which leads directly to Mutare, passing through the towns of Marondera and Rusape. Approximate distance: 265 km. From Nyanga, drive to Juliasdale, then continue south to Mutare (and incidentally the villages of Mutasa, Bonzo and Watsomba). A few kilometers after Bonzo, the road splits in two, but both roads are paved and of equal length, leading to Mutare. The eastern route, however, passes near the Odzani Falls and through the village of Penalonga.Mutare's main bus station is in the Sakubva area, a little out of town. From here, chicken buses and kombis leave for Harare, Bulawayo, Chipinge, Chimanimani and Chiredzi, among others.
