Kwekwe, whose name comes from the croaking of the frogs of the eponymous river, is the mining town par excellence: a metropolis built by the prospectors at the time of the gold fever and erected, so to speak, in the middle of the veins. This precious metal has been mined in the area for a thousand years: the dominant tribes traded in it and it was this mineral that attracted the first Europeans (the Portuguese) to the interior of southern Africa in the 16th century. At the end of the 19th century, after the defeat of Lobengula, a veritable fever took hold of the region and British prospectors began to flock. The first modern mine was at Globe and Phoenix. Today, it is almost completely abandoned, as are most of the mines that were built afterwards. Gold prospecting has been replaced by new mining activities such as chrome and copper. However, a few Shona gold diggers can still be seen sitting by the rivers in the area to the northeast of the town. Equipped with homemade wooden sieves, these women filter the water in the hope of finding some gold flakes..
