Known to the Romans before becoming one of the lands of the bishops of Fréjus, this district of Fréjus is supported on the first eastern foothills of the Maures massif which are lost in the ponds of Villepey, refuge of many migratory birds. It takes its name from the abbot Aygulfus, martyr of the Benedictine abbey of Lérins, killed in the 7th century by monks irritated by a strict application of the rule. Legend has it that his body, placed in a boat, drifted to the site of the present village. The seaside resort was created from scratch, especially under the impulse of the painter Carolus Durand and attracted other celebrities
