Saint-Gabriel is the bastion of Rodriguan Catholicism and is worth a visit. Entirely built in local stones and covered with a tin roof, the cathedral, as it stands today, was built in the 1930s by the clergy and the faithful. In the heights, in the middle of the vegetation, it is one of the most important buildings of Rodrigues and one of the largest churches of the Indian Ocean which can accommodate up to 2,000 faithful. The two Sunday masses are important moments of the local life in which the Rodriguans, dressed in their costumes, take part in a sometimes meditative, sometimes singing and joyful atmosphere.
