The one whose name means "field of ships" was founded in 1702 when Peter the Great and Menchikov set up a shipyard there. Until 1850, no less than 450 ships left the yard. With the construction of the Lower Svir power station (1927) the town regained a certain dynamism, even though it was almost destroyed during the Second World War. At km 1 159-1 166, the mouth of the river is 700 m wide. Beyond the banks, this area of 40,000 ha forms a large nature reserve where bears, lynx, elk and many rare bird species live.
