Reefs, reefs, fogs, strong sea currents: the approaches to Ushant are known by sailors from all over the world. This explains the installation of several lighthouses at its extremities. Two lighthouses on land, accompanied by three lighthouses at sea, mark out the coast. The Stiff tower, built after the sinking of the Amoco Cadiz in 1982, completes the system while monitoring the Ushant rail. Despite the harshness of island life, this has not prevented people from settling there. Several paths and roads allow you to go around. You will discover wild and grandiose places: cliffs, steep coasts... The town of Lampaul concentrates most of the houses and shops. However, there are a multitude of hamlets, two chapels and eighteen calvaries scattered throughout the island. Go and discover them, walk around the island, especially by bike as it is still the best way to get around here! As for the vegetation, made up of gorse, heather, agapanthus and peat, it is sparse. Only a few weeping willows have taken root near the old washhouses and fountains. Finally, migratory birds and grey seals also find refuge on the island. Observe all this, talk to the islanders, let yourself be tamed by the wildness of the island as well as by its refinement. Ushant is a whole art of living! To soak up the atmosphere of Ushant, the best thing to do is to spend a few days there, either in the middle of winter or during one of its festivals (music or literature for example)!
