Charleston Peak is the highest peak in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area at 12,000 feet. Located about 60 miles west of Las Vegas, it provides an unexpected breath of fresh air for heat-stricken Sin City residents: in the height of summer, thermometers can read up to ten degrees cooler than in the city. The park is home to several campgrounds, picnic areas, and a multitude of hiking trails where you may be lucky enough to come across wild horses or donkeys. One day is enough to travel the two canyon route and stop on a few trails. Because of its climate and elevation, Mount Charleston is covered with snow more than half the year. Skiing is generally possible from late November to mid-April, with trails ranging from 2,594 to 2,856 meters above sea level.
