Founded in the 8th century, the charming wine-growing town of Éguisheim is rich in history, including the birthplace of the future Pope Leo IX at the dawn of the 11th century. However, various archaeological remains testify to occupation of the present-day Éguisheim site as far back as the Palaeolithic era! Built around its castle, the village features fountains, colonial courtyards and narrow streets lined with charming Alsatian houses adorned with venerable inscriptions on their door lintels. Built in the 12th century, the Saints-Pierre-et-Paul church features Romanesque architecture with three naves and a tower. Listed as a Monument Historique since 1933, it houses a rare Vierge Ouvrante dating from 1300. It is one of only two remaining examples in Alsace, along with the one in Kaysersberg. In 1954, new stained glass windows were installed to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the death of Pope Leo IX. With its 1,700 or so inhabitants, Éguisheim also has a reputation as the "cradle of the Alsatian vineyard", not least because of the fame of its Grands Crus Eichberg and Pfersigberg. Magnificently flowered from the first days of spring (Grand Prix national du fleurissement since 1989), this fortified town remains one of the jewels of authentic Alsace. Throughout the year, it is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. The town is decked out in a thousand colors as it hosts a wide range of events: wine festival, mushroom festival, truffle fair, Christmas market... Yes, not just anyone can be elected "Favorite Village of the French" (2013)!
