This memorial symbolizes the union between the whites and the blacks, the red symbolizing what unites them, their heart and blood
This memorial was unveiled in 2005 in Middelburg, the birthplace of Dutch slavery. It is the work of the artist (from Zierikzee), Hedi Bogaers. It consists of 4 granite pillars where black and white are united by red. This monument symbolizes the union between the whites and the blacks, the red symbolizing what unites them, their heart and blood. This is where the annual Middelburg commemoration takes place every year on June 30, with songs and prayers.
