Dzaoudzi (17,831 inhabitants), which was for a long time a strategic political place in Mayotte, is built on a rock surrounded by a small cliff that is dominated by a few buildings lost in the greenery. It is in Petite-Terre that one finds the greatest number of vestiges of colonial architecture, including the superb building of the former prefecture located halfway between the two landing stages of the barges, whose plans were made by Gustave Eiffel. It is now a cultural centre. Dzaoudzi is also the link between the two islands, as it is here that the two barges dock for their multiple daily rotations.
