Travel Guide Dessau

The former capital of Anhalt, which still has some pretty historic buildings despite the extensive destruction of the last war (80%), is the third largest city in Saxony-Anhalt. Industrialised and nowadays quite depressed economically, it is above all the synonym of Bauhaus. This famous avant-garde school of architecture, ancestor of all 20th century buildings, cubic, serial, functionalist and other Le Corbusier, founded in 1919 in Weimar by the architect Walter Gropius, was transferred to Dessau in 1925. You can still see its constructions in some parts of the city. The creators of the Bauhaus wanted a functional, decent and cheap home, without ornaments, and accessible to all. In addition, the creation of furniture and functionalist design was added. The purpose of a visit to Dessau, in addition to a look at the city centre (Rathausplatz), which has some beautiful buildings, will be above all to discover the Bauhaus. Dessau is the birthplace of composer Kurt Weill, famous for his collaboration with Bertold Brecht.
