Getaria is one of the prettiest fishing villages on the coast, with a beautiful beach. It is also the birthplace of the great navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano, who in 1522 brought back from the Philippines the only surviving ship of the first round-the-world expedition, and of the famous fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga. Whaling was the city's main activity for several centuries. Its old quarter is well preserved. The port is lined with numerous restaurants with terraces, where you'll be sure to sample the txakoli (Basque wine, white or red, best enjoyed chilled), whose vineyards surround the village.
