This village of barely 90 inhabitants was the birthplace of Saint Dominic of Silos, a Benedictine monk born in the year 1000 and founder of the beautiful monastery of Silos (province of Burgos). The history of this small village is closely linked to that of the Bernardine nuns, to whom Count Lope Diaz de Haro donated land in Cañas and Canillas to build a monastery. Since its foundation, the Abbey of Santa Maria de San Salvador de Cañas has been inhabited by a community of Cistercian nuns without interruption since 1169, despite the vicissitudes of history. Today, pilgrims from Compostela stop here to visit the monastery
