Kastraki is located 2 km from Kalambaka and looks more like a big town. However, it is possible to stay there, at the foot of the Meteors, and to take advantage of its traditional character which Kalambaka lost a long time ago. The monasteries can be reached very easily as Kastraki is built just below the rocks. This picturesque village lives in the shadow of the impressive rocks. It takes its name from a Byzantine castle, of which only a few ruins are preserved. However, you can visit the church of Panagia Doupiani, with the Doupianis cloister, which was the centre of worship for the first hermits in the 11th and 12th centuries
