The origins of Brunstatt are unknown. The convent of Hohenburg - Mont Saint-Odile - had possessions, but the documents that talk about it did not go back to the beginning of the th century. They were written around 1200 and wrongly dated from the th century. It is assumed that a town existed at that time near the Burnenbach, which favoured the construction of the fort castle. In 1310, Brunstatt was given by the emperor in fee to the Earl of Ferrette. A few years later, Jeannette, the last countess of Ferrette, married a Habsburg, Albert II, said the Wise. Brunstatt thus became Austrian and stayed until the Treaty of Westphalia - 1648 - by which the Austrian lands in Alsace were ceded to the King of France. The history of the city is directly linked to that of the castle and the lords from 1295 to 1657, then to the nobles of Besenval of 1657 to the Revolution. Then, from 1790 to 1857 various transactions and deeds were registered. The manor was demolished in 1857 during the construction of the Mulhouse-Belfort railway. Brunstatt is a source town by its origin, a place of defence, a city of water, rich in historical reality.
