It is the smallest of the three Tremiti islands, but it is the administrative and religious heart of the archipelago, as evidenced by the buildings of the Abbey of Santa Maria a Mare. The history of these islands is intertwined with that of the religious complex: founded in 1045, its walls are more reminiscent of a fortress than a place of pilgrimage. During its golden age (15th-16th centuries), the abbey was equipped with a war fleet that helped it to seize territories on the coast and to repel the assault of Sultan Suleiman II in 1567. San Nicola is today a pleasant tourist site where every street corner reveals a church or medieval fortifications.
