Located in the regional park of Castelli Romani, about 20 km from Rome, Castel Gandolfo is one of the borghi più belli d'Italia (most beautiful villages in Italy). It is believed that Castel Gandolfo occupies the site of the ancient Alba la Longe, a city founded by Aeneas' son, Ascanius. It was the first rival of Rome and saw the Horatii, heroes of Rome, and the Curiatii, champions of Albe-la-Longue. Very pleasant during the summer, Castel Gandolfo offers a beautiful view of the lake of Albano which it dominates. It is visited for its soothing atmosphere and for its pontifical summer villas. Open to the public, the pope's resting place is indeed a must-see, as are its sumptuous gardens. You can discover them on foot or on board an ecological bus that runs on Saturdays and Sundays. It allows you to visit the botanical and architectural wealth of the papal residences. Castel Gandolfo is a recommended day trip, especially since it is easily reached by train or bus from Rome
