The island is 11 km long and a few hundred meters wide and resembles the Lido in its shape. It is located between the mouths of the ports of Malamocco and Chioggia, 22 km from Venice. The first settlement on the island, made up of small centers of habitation, was Albiola (now San Pietro in Volta). Its current structure dates back to the end of the war against Genoa (1380), when the Podestà of Chioggia gave the land south of the port near Albiola to 4 large families (Scarpa, Zennaro, Vianello and Busetto) and entrusted them with the reconstruction, thus contributing to the rebirth of the island. Despite the colossal work that are the murazzi (walls), designed by Vincenzo Coronelli and realized by B. Zendrini (1744), they were damaged during the floods of 1966. In the place where the Virgin appeared is the church of Santa Maria di San Vito, rebuilt in 1723, according to a polygonal shape designed by the architect Andrea Tirali. The typical economic activities of the island are related to horticulture, fishing, lace and shipyards. Few tourists, much atmosphere.
