Homestead, whose name means farm, is a small, sunny town of about 85,000 people, 30 miles from Miami. It was founded in 1913 by the community of homesteaders who helped build the railroad from Miami to Key West. The city is the gateway to two national parks: the Everglades and Biscayne National Park, north of the Keys. Although Homestead is a stopover for many visitors, there are several local attractions worth spending time in, such as its pleasant, historic downtown area, which is easily explored on foot. It is home to one of Miami Dade County's campuses.
