Commander Edmond Marin La Meslée crashed into the town of Dessenheim on February 4, 1945 aboard his Republic P-47 Thunderbolt. A huge five-pointed stone star, thirty metres in diameter, turned into a tomb where he rests, was erected in 1946: "At the place of his fall, his comrades-in-arms drew a five-pointed star... Now his star responds from the black earth to all those who light up in the evening above it," wrote Jules Roy in 1948.
