At 28 kilometers from Santa Rosa de Aguaray, Laguna Blanca is a protected wilderness area of 804 hectares, managed by private owners. This area includes a natural lake of 147 hectares, surrounded by beautiful white sandy beaches, and a very rich vegetation characteristic of three eco-regions : Bosque Atlántico del Alto Paraná, Cerrado and Chaco Húmedo. The transition zone of the three biotopes is believed to be unique in the world and is home to 283 species of birds, including the Yby Yaú or White-winged Nightjar (Eleothreptus Candicans), a critically endangered nocturnal bird that has been observed in only three places on Earth. Laguna Blanca was therefore logically declared an Important Bird Area by Birdlife International. The crystalline waters of the lake are much appreciated by Paraguayans during the summer, with an average water temperature of 24 °C (18 °C in winter). The nature reserve Rancho Laguna Blanca, is unfortunately no longer open to the public, due to conflicts between partners. The only place equipped to receive visitors is (at the time of publication of this guide) the Ecotur complex. It does not have the same natural assets (smaller beach and less vegetation), but the place is pleasant.
