Rising from the stony sands in 1968 thanks to Sheikh Zayed's desire to provide a home for forty Bedouin families, and bordered to the south by the dunes that herald the Rub Al Khali, the capital of the Al Gharbia province is a crossroads of burning tarmac, a haphazard alternation of villas and small buildings on either side of the E45 national highway linking the coast to the desert. There's nothing special here to keep the visitor away for long, but he or she can take advantage of the opportunity to fill up with petrol and take a refreshing rest under a palm tree in the municipal garden. The only attraction is the Al Dhafra festival, held every year from November to February.
