Areguá is a very popular destination for the people of Asunción. On Sundays, you come here to stroll around, visit artists' galleries, buy pottery and enjoy the restaurants. It is a village out of time, with wide cobbled streets, surrounded by beautiful houses from the last century. These mansiones, or mansions, bear witness to a past splendour, when Areguá was the fashionable seaside resort between the 1920s and 1950s. The most beautiful houses overlook the Avenida del Lago, which runs down from the church of La Candelaria to the Ypacaraí lake. A body of water that has inspired poets and musicians. Listen to Recuerdos del Ypacaraí, the famous guaranía performed by Demetrio Ortíz, or his covers of Caetano Veloso, Julio Iglesias, Luis Alberto del Paraná, or Berta Rojas. "Una noche tibia nos conocimos, junto al agua azul de Ypacarai..." Ypacaraí would come from the guarani "Y pa karai" ("you speak of this water (y) lord (karai)? "), in response to a conquistador's question about the body of water. The lake is 22 km long and 6 km wide. It's the largest in the country.
