According to a famous Punjabi proverb, "he who has not seen Lahore is not yet born" (Jinne Laur nai wekhiya o te jamiya nai). According to Hindu legend, Lahore was founded by Loh, son of Rāma, king of ancient India. He would have built a fort there, called Lohkot or Lahawar, which would eventually give its name to the city. Lahore remained the capital of the Ghaznevide empire for nearly 165 years (until 1186) before being taken by the Turks, Khaljî, Tughlûq, Sayyîd, Lodhis and Pathanes. From 1524, Lahore fell under the control of the Moguls who made it their capital from 1584 to 1598. Successive emperors embellished it with refined buildings and gardens, from which Lahore took one of its nicknames, "the city of gardens". With the fort, the Badshahi and Wazir Khan mosques, the tomb of Jehangir and the gardens of Shalimar, the Mogul people will have a profound impact on the city. At the end of the 18th century, after many incursions, the Sikhs finally took power, which they kept until the arrival of the British settlers in 1849. Lahore, rich in all these influences, is a lively, colourful city, divided between modernity and traditions. You can eat in a trendy restaurant or taste local specialities in one of the shops in the old town. Visit one of the oldest private museums on the subcontinent or a contemporary art gallery. Crossing 4x4s overtake carts and going dancing with the Sufis or at a private rave party!
