The city of Dubăsari is an ancient crossing point between the two banks of the Dniestr river, whose surroundings were already populated by the Gauls and the Scythians. The river served as a trade route between the Baltic and Black Seas for several centuries. After liberating the region from Ottoman occupation, Russia took control of Dubăsari in 1792. During the Moldovan-Transnistrian conflict of 1991-1992, the city had a strategic role and, together with its surroundings, was the scene of violent fighting. Roghi and Molovata can be reached at Nouă, a charming Moldovan enclave in Transnistrian territory, situated in a meander of the Dniestr.
