The modern city of Tiraspol was founded in 1792 on the site of a former Greek colony. It was never part of Bessarabia and was occupied by Great Romania between 1941 and 1944. The Soviet regime had turned it into an industrial centre. In 1992, the city had 203,000 souls (41% Russian, 32% Ukrainian and 18% Moldovan). Nowadays, it has 133,807 inhabitants and houses a university, the KVINT distillery, a museum, a theatre, monuments... The statue of General Alexander Suvorov, founder of Tiraspol, is enthroned in the park near the central square and the Dniester. Statues of Lenin stand in front of the House of Soviets and the Supreme Soviet.
