Cahul has long been at the crossroads of Russian and Turkish routes. It saw battles from the 15th to the 20th century and changed its name several times. On July 7 and 21, 1770, Russian troops under Marshal Pierre Roumyantsev defeated an Ottoman army five times larger. In 1774, Frumoasa (as it was then called) was a large village with more than 95 farms. In 1835, Tsar Nicholas I raised it to the status of a town and gave it its present name. Governor Federov had the beautiful Cathedral of Saints Michael and Gabriel built here in 1850. There is a museum, the spa Nufărul Alb and a biennial summer music festival.
