Southeast of Pasadena - just under 7 km from Old Town - San Marino is a primarily residential town. There's not much point in passing through, except to visit the magnificent estate built by Henry Huntington, an early 20th-century transit magnate. Today, it is both an art museum and a botanical garden complex. In addition, its exceptionally rich library - housing some 600,000 books and 3 million manuscripts - makes it one of the most magical places in the Los Angeles area. To take full advantage of its treasures, allow 3-4 hours to explore the site.
