South-east of Tri-Cities, by OR 12, Walla Walla is located in the heart of a rich agricultural valley (wheat and peas), once an Indian territory. Walla Walla means "abundant water".Lewis and Clark were the first white men to enter in 1805, followed by trappers who established Fort Walla Walla Walla in 1818. In 1836, Dr. Marcus Whitman founded the first white mission in the region at the nearby Waiilatpu site. Following his assassination in 1847 and the subsequent Cayuse War, the governor of the new Washington territory, Isaac Stevens, organized the Walla Walla Council in the valley in 1855 with the Cayuse, Umatilla, Walla Walla, Nez-Percé, Palouse and Yakama peoples. The establishment of the reserves of the Yakamas, Nez-Percés and Umatillas will be recorded there.
