This small island of the archipelago (the island of Feathers) is the closest to Stockholm. It is ideal for the perfume of the Baltic and its unique atmosphere for half a day. However, in 1381, Fjäderholmarna had to wait until the end of the seventeenth century to be inhabited, given the almost total absence of wood and pastures on the island. In 1862, only thirty people lived there, mainly artisans and peasants. Fjäderholmarna experienced a turbulent period during the episode of the Vodka War in the 1870 s: the large producer of spirits L.O. Smith (creator of the Absolut brand) offers its customers, to bypass the state monopoly, the crossing so that they can supply vodka on the island. In less than nine months, Smith sold nearly one million liters of his drink! Then the Navy used the island as a base. It was only since the mid -1980 s that Fjäderholmarna reopened its craft shops, restaurants and cafés, again becoming part of the national park and a readily accessible tourist destination. One of Fjäderholmarna's major interests is the presence of artisans who open their workshops and sell their products: wood, glass, metals, natural fibers…
